Website Redesign Checklist
A redesign can transform how your business looks online — or quietly wipe out years of search visibility if it’s done carelessly. Use this checklist before, during and after your redesign to keep what works and fix what doesn’t.
Before the redesign
- Define goals: more enquiries, better image, faster site, new services?
- Export current traffic and top pages from analytics
- List pages that rank or bring leads — protect these
- Crawl and save every current URL
- Collect content that’s still accurate and useful
- Note what customers ask that the site doesn’t answer
During design and build
- Plan the new sitemap; map every old URL to a new one
- Keep or improve content on high-performing pages
- Keep titles, headings and internal links on key pages
- Design mobile-first and test on real phones
- Set up tracking for calls, WhatsApp and forms
- Build on a staging site blocked from search engines
Launch day
- Implement 301 redirects from every old URL
- Remove the staging “noindex” and check robots.txt
- Submit the new XML sitemap to Search Console
- Test forms, payments and integrations live
- Check for broken links and missing images
- Verify analytics and conversion tracking are firing
After launch (first 4–8 weeks)
- Monitor Search Console for errors and coverage issues
- Compare traffic and rankings with pre-launch data
- Fix any 404s that appear
- Collect feedback from customers and staff
- Improve pages that underperform

FAQs
Questions, answered
Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings?
It can if URLs change without redirects or valuable content is removed. With URL mapping, redirects and content preservation, rankings usually hold or improve.
What is a 301 redirect?
A permanent redirect that sends visitors and search engines from an old URL to its new equivalent, passing on most of the old page’s value.
How long does a redesign take?
It depends on the size of the site and amount of new content. Package redesigns can be quick; larger sites are scoped individually.
Should I redesign or rebuild?
If the platform itself is limiting you (speed, features, editing), rebuild. If only the look is dated, a redesign may be enough.
